Iowa QuiltScape for August 12, 2020

You may have been hearing in the news about the Derecho storm that hit Iowa earlier this week. While parts of our state are completely devastated right now from the storm damage, Winterset was just on the edge of the storm and we did not sustain the level of destruction of some towns. We’re thankful that we came through fairly unscathed, but our hearts go out to our fellow Iowans who are struggling with a natural disaster on top of the already challenging set of circumstances we are fall facing right now.

Virtual Gallery Walk: Part TWO

Monday • August 17th • 12:30 pm Central

On August 10th, we met up with exhibit curators Barbara Brackman and Deb Rowden, plus special guests Julie Silber and Joe Cunningham, for a virtual gallery walk through the ‘Out of Control’ exhibit. We had SO much fun in our first gallery walk and only saw half of the quilts (!) so we’re meeting up again on Monday, August 17th to finish the tour!

The first 100 guests will be able to login in to the Zoom meeting, allowing them to interact with the presenters and submit questions and comments through the chat feature.

If you’re not able to make it to the live event, you can catch the recording which will be uploaded on this page after the meeting. This online event is offered free of charge but donations to the Iowa Quilt Museum are welcome and appreciated.

‘Out of Control’ Quilt Challenge

Show us YOUR creativity!

One of our fabulous volunteer docents came for her shift last week and brought with her a quilt top that she had recently designed and pieced. The design for this quilt was inspired by one of the pieces in our ‘Out of Control’ exhibit!

This gave us a great idea! We’ve heard so many visitors to this exhibit share how freeing it is to see quilts made in this ‘out of control’ style and that they’d like to try it themselves, so we’re issuing a quilt ‘challenge!’

Don’t be scared off by the word challenge, it’s really quite easy and fun! Here’s what you do…

  1. Find a quilt in this exhibit that you feel especially drawn to. You can look through the slide show on our “Current Exhibit” page for your inspiration or, better yet, visit in person!
  2. Use this quilt as inspiration for a design of your own; not a copy of the original! Your design can be any size from wall hanging to queen size bed. Anything goes!
  3. Send us an email with a photo of our quilt top and the following information:
    • Your Name
    • City and State where you live
    • What ‘Out of Control’ quilt inspired you
    • A short paragraph about yourself and your quilt!

The deadline for submissions is midnight on September 20th. We’ll share a slide show of all of the ‘entries’ on September 28th and encourage our online community to comment and vote for their favorites!

If you have any questions, contact IQM Director Megan Barrett at director@IowaQuiltMuseum.org. That’s where entries should be sent, too!

Current Hours at the IQM

We encourage the wearing of masks, especially while in our gift shop. We are also asking guests to travel in one direction around the gallery and maintain a safe distance from other guests. Hand washing and sanitizing areas are available and we are using increased cleaning procedures.

Virtual Tour of the Madison County Airing of the Quilts

If you weren’t able to join us for the 2020 Madison County Airing of the Quilts, or just want to re-live it, we invite you to take a trip through the photo display that we’ve created! You can find it by clicking the button below.

We’re so grateful to all of the Iowa quilters who loaned their treasures for display, to the dozens of volunteers who made the event possible and to everyone who came to Winterset to see the quilts. Mark next year’s date on your calendars, June 5, 2021!
