2022 Airing of the Quilts

Iowa Quiltscape May 2022

If you haven’t heard, the 2022 Airing of the Quilts is quickly approaching on Saturday, June 4. Most of our activity the past few weeks has revolved around our yearly fundraiser and we’re very excited to spend the day with you in less than a month!

We’ve also started a call for quilts for our Winter 2022/2023 exhibit: These ARE Your Grandmother’s Quilts. Check out the guidelines below!

Our current exhibit Midwest Modern is receiving great reviews! It’s turned out to be a wonderful exhibit for our rainy Spring. The gallery is full of bold and bright colors.

Hopefully we’ll see you soon!

2022 Madison County Airing of the Quilts

We’re so excited for the sun to come out and to start hanging quilts around Winterset, Iowa for the 2022 Airing of the Quilts.

There’s quit a bit more to this year’s event in that we’ve extended the fun three days prior to the Saturday quilt festival. I’ll cover more about the classes and retreat below.

Saturday is all about the QUILTS! This year we’re looking forward to seeing the Central Iowa Modern Quilt Guild’s (CIAMQG) quilts hanging on Cedar, Holliwell and Hogback covered bridges.

For the first time since QuiltCon 2022 you can see the winning quilts. They’ll be hanging inside the Cutler-Donahoe Bridge located at the City Park.

Grab a glass of wine before or after you take a peek at the Des Moines Area Quilter’s Guild’s quilts hanging at the Madison County Winery.

Diana Murtha will show her quilts at the Winterset Art Center in a single artist show. Be sure to check that out!

Even though the Madison County Courthouse is under construction, we’ll still hang quilts around the historical town square. You can also see quilts at the Winterset Livery and in the More Pieces Retreat Center.

These ARE Your Grandmother’s Quilts

December 20, 2022 – March 12, 2023

We’re celebrating Iowa Grandmothers for our 2022 Winter exhibit and are asking for submissions by you!

If you own (or can borrow) a family quilt made by your grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother, or grandmother-in-law, the museum would like to consider it for inclusion. If you are a quilter who happens to be a grandmother, our committee is interested in those quilts, too. We are searching for quilts from the nineteenth, twentieth, and twenty-first centuries.

The museum is looking for approximately 28 visually striking quilts to fill the gallery, but showcasing the lives of the women who made them is equally important. We want to include a photograph of the maker and lots of information about her life in our show signage. We are hoping the maker’s family will have at least one good story about her to share.

For quilts made by grandmothers now deceased, we’ll need to know the full name of the maker, her birth and death dates, where she was living at the time she made the quilt (i.e., name of town), and the approximate date the quilt was made if known.

We know there are great antique quilts all over Iowa, and we are counting on people to dig them out of the closet and attic and submit them. We also know there are plenty of grandmothers in the community making wonderful quilts every day. We want to build a great exhibit using Iowan quilts.

Submission Requirements:
—2 photos (or more) of quilt (please include one overall and one detail)
—completed submission form
—quilts must be clean and in non-fragile condition to be considered

The submission deadline is May 13.
