Joe Cunningham Is Coming to Winterset

Contemporary quilt artist Joe Cunningham will be in Winterset on Wednesday, January 19, to conduct a special gallery walk of “Here Comes the Sun,” the current exhibit at the Iowa Quilt Museum. Cunningham, based in San Francisco, curated the exhibit, which features nineteenth and early twentieth-century quilts, as well as new works made by current artists—including two of his own. The color orange figures prominently in every quilt on display

All of us at the Iowa Quilt Museum decided winter would be a perfect time to offer ultra-bright, glowing quilts. Even though people tend to say they don’t like orange, this exhibit has been extremely popular. Several prominent contemporary quilters created works especially for the exhibit. Joe was the perfect choice for curator. His extensive network of quilt artists and collectors merged to create a spectacular exhibit.

Cunningham has been a professional quilt artist since 1979. His book MEN AND THE ART OF QUILTMAKING was the first book on its subject. His latest book, MAN MADE QUILTS: CIVIL WAR TO THE PRESENT, is a catalogue for a show of the same title at the Shelburne Museum in Shelburne, VT. His quilts are in the permanent collections of the DeYoung museum, the Shelburne Museum, the Newark Museum, the San Jose Museum of Quilts and Textiles, and many private collections. One of his works on display, REST, was inspired by the famous Van Gogh painting, CHAIR WITH PIP

Wednesday’s gallery walk is from 4 to 5 p.m. Admission is $10. A free reception with appetizers and beverages follows from 5:30 to 6:30. According to IQM board member Marianne Fons, “Joe is a very entertaining speaker. His presentation will be a lot of fun.” The exhibit closes Sunday, January 23.
