Beautiful Simplicity: Two Color Quilts

Now on Exhibit at the Iowa Quilt Museum

In these twenty-five quilts from the collection of the International Quilt Museum, makers and collectors alike have recognized the striking results of using only two colors when creating a quilt. Some makers strove for a dramatic contrast; others highlighted their patchwork or quilting patterns by using a more harmonious pair of colors. Some used solid colors, and others chose tiny prints that read as two colors from a few steps away. In each case, these objects highlight the fundamental visual interest that draws us to quilts. Without the influence of large prints and multi-tonal compositions, the viewer can engage more fully with the overall composition and construction of each piece, from the quilting stitches to the way each pieced or appliquéd pattern is attached to the next.

Each of the quilts on the walls belongs to Int’l Quilt Museum’s education collection, which serves an important facet of the museum’s mission: engaging and educating the public about global quiltmaking practices.

Raffle Drawing

Sunday • October 11th
Tickets available in our online gift shop – $2 each

In a typical year, the entire town of Winterset would be gearing up to welcome tens of thousands of visitors in the next few days for our annual Covered Bridge Festival. Here at the Iowa Quilt Museum we would be getting out our ‘quilted’ barn among our other preparations.

This year is anything but typical and the Covered Bridges Festival is among the countless activities and events that have been cancelled or postponed in 2020. However, in the spirit of celebration, we’ll be drawing the winner of our “Is this Heaven?” raffle quilt this Sunday and making one raffle ticket purchaser the proud new owner of this fantastic quilt!

We’ll be missing celebrating with you all this weekend but you don’t have to miss your chance to own this quilt that is a perfect iconic representation of Autumn in Iowa—pumpkins, corn, tractors, school houses, barns, silos, churches and quilt blocks!

Click HERE to buy a raffle ticket—or 10, or 20!
