This week mother nature decorated our landscape in white frost. The contrast between the white wrapping the branches of the bare trees and the dark brown of the bark is exquisite. It’d make a stunning landscape quilt.
With our white landscape is the coming of the holidays! It’s so cliché, but this year really did go by fast. We’ve installed four exhibits, hosted four gallery walks and multiple Zoom events, held the Airing of the Quilts Festival with classes, a retreat and more. It’s been a busy year and was a great learning year for me.
I’m looking forward to the next year as we start to streamline a few of our programs and expand our programming.
Happy Holidays,
Carissa Heckathorn, Museum Director
Gallery Walk Success
We had over 20 people at our gallery walk on December 9th where attendees were able to hear from Nancy Bavor, the juror of the Fiber Art Now Excellence in Quilts 2022 exhibit. Nancy gave us firsthand insights into the process of choosing 30 quilts from over 300 submissions, and explaining why the winning quilts stood out from the others. Exhibit artists Lisa Ellis and Kathy Suprenant also joined us and gave us the story of their quilts. Overall, it was an inspiring evening at the Museum!
This is the last weekend to see this exhibit before we switch it out for These ARE Your Grandmother’s Quilts showcasing the quilts of our Iowa Grandmothers.
You can see more photos of the gallery walk on our Facebook page.
Or visit our website under Current Exhibit and see all of the quilts from this exhibit.
Home For The Holidays
Please note the Museum’s upcoming holiday and exhibit hours.
On Sunday, December 18 we will close at 2 PM to take down the current exhibit.
We are closed Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.
New Exhibit – These ARE Your Grandmother’s Quilts
Most of us have memories of our grandmothers and there are a lucky few who have been given firsthand the legacy of quilting by their grandmothers. We celebrate those Iowa grandmothers who have made quilts that have been passed down with memories tucked among their stitches and grandmothers who are still making those quilts and memories.
You will get to help us celebrate 27 grandmothers and their stories in our next exhibit These ARE Your Grandmother’s Quilts. We have photos and commentary from their families and hope you’ll delight in these stories as much as we have.
This exhibit runs from December 20, 2022 to March 12, 2023. It is graciously sponsored by the Robert Van Scoy family in loving memory of Velma Van Scoy of Winterset, IA.
Gifts For Everyone
We have gifts for everyone in our Museum Gift Shop. Everything from children’s quilts to potholders and quilt block soaps. Most of our items are handmade or locally sourced so you know you’re supporting the local economy.
Come in and see us or shop online. If you don’t see what you want, give us a call at 515-462-5988 and we can help you via the phone.
Will You Support The Iowa Quilt Museum?
It’s that time of year to donate to your favorite non-profits. We hope the Iowa Quilt Museum is in your consideration. To make the act of donating feel a bit more tangible, we’ve provided levels of donations that go directly to a program or exhibit.
Donations before December 31 will be matched by a generous donor up to $5,000.
Review options on our website.
Amazon Smile
There’s another way to support the Iowa Quilt Museum, and that’s through Amazon Smile. With every purchase you make in Amazon, 0.5% will go to the Iowa Quilt Museum. If 100 people spent $100 every month, the museum would receive $1,500 per quarter! That would pay for an exhibit!
