October Fun at the Iowa Quilt Museum!

Covered Bridge Festival — October 10–11

Stop by our booth during the Covered Bridge Festival on Saturday, October 10, and Sunday, October 11. We’ll have our big quilted barn set up for a great photo opportunity, plus a demonstration booth featuring quilters hand piecing and hand quilting. Kids can enjoy quilt-themed coloring sheets and puzzle blocks to create their own quilt patterns.

We’ll also begin our raffle for Iowa, a quilt donated by artist Margaret Abramshe.

About Iowa: This whole-cloth digital design was created by the artist and printed onto linen/cotton canvas, then finished with acrylic paint, textile medium, and free-motion quilting completed by hand without computer assistance. Inspired by a Library of Congress photograph of a boy in a tire swing holding a cow by its halter, the quilt reflects a hopeful portrait of Iowa farm life. The boy is placed over a historical map painted in the colors of wheat, green corn fields, and sunshine. Margaret invites viewers to imagine their own version of his story.

Be sure to stop by our booth while visiting the Covered Bridge Festival!

10-Year Anniversary Exhibit Reception — October 15

Join us on Thursday, October 15, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. as we celebrate this important milestone together. To everyone who has visited, shared a quilt, volunteered, or supported the museum over the years: thank you for being part of our story!

We are also honored to spotlight Velma VanScoy, an expert hand quilter whose quilt is displayed in our mezzanine. Her husband, Robert, generously sponsors an exhibit each year in her honor, and this year he is sponsoring our Anniversary Exhibit. We are grateful for his continued support and the opportunity to share Velma’s beautiful work with our visitors.

Our Anniversary Exhibit closes Sunday, October 18, at 4:00 p.m., so don’t miss your chance to see quilts by some of the biggest names in quilting. We hope to see you there!

Coming Soon: Erick Wolfmeyer, 25 Years in Iowa

Opening October 20, the Iowa Quilt Museum is excited to present a solo exhibition celebrating quilt artist Erick Wolfmeyer and his remarkable 25-year journey in Iowa.

In 2001, Erick moved to Iowa specifically to learn more about the art of quilting. What began as a new adventure has grown into a celebrated body of work. This special exhibition brings together a curated selection of quilts that tell the story of those 25 transformative years.

Get a free sneak peek on October 20 from 7:00 a.m. to noon during Coffee in the Mornings at the Museum. Stop by on your commute to work for a free cup of coffee, a bag of donut holes from Bakery Unlimited, and an early look at Erick’s beautiful work.

Then join us for Erick Wolfmeyer’s gallery reception on Sunday, October 25, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. Enjoy light food and drinks, meet Erick, and hear about his experience moving to Iowa, living here, and perfecting his quilting.
