Iowa QuiltScape for January 25, 2021

Virtual Iowa Quiltscape Series

Join us each Tuesday at Twelve for a live program from the Iowa Quilt Museum. Some weeks will focus on our current exhibit, String Theory, while other weeks will focus on various aspects of the quilting landscape (or Quiltscape) in Iowa.

Our January 26th session will feature four Iowans: Carol Bodensteiner, Melanie McNeil, Diane Murtha, & Jessica Plunkett.

These women are involved with quilting through a variety of roles—teacher, author, designer—and will share their unique experiences in the quilting world as well as some commonalities, I’m sure. This is a ‘pour a cup of tea and let’s have a chat’ kind of program. And since it’s looking like Iowa will be covered in a thick blanket of snow tomorrow (9-17 inches have been forecast), it will be a wonderful day for a virtual meet-up!

To Join the Zoom meeting, click on the following link, or type the Meeting ID into Zoom:

We will use the SAME meeting link for ALL of our Virtual Iowa Quiltscape sessions – each Tuesday at Twelve. If you have questions about how to join the Zoom meeting, email or call us—director@IowaQuiltMuseum.org or 515-462-5988.

Virtual Gallery Walk

Now Available for Purchase

Unlike our Tuesday virtual programs that are more conversations, our virtual gallery walk video is just the quilts, accompanied by narration of the exhibit descriptions. The video is now available for purchase in our online store for the price of single admission, $6. Just like admission to the museum, this is intended as a ‘single viewer’ purchase. If you would like to discuss the possibility of a guild or group presentation, please contact Megan Barrett, director@IowaQuiltMuseum.org

Unfortunately, we do not currently have the ability to deliver this ‘on demand’ and must do so manually. You will receive an email from the Iowa Quilt Museum within 24 hours of your purchase with instructions for accessing the private video.

Also, in order to allow this item to be purchased in the same transaction as other items, we have to list it as a physical item in our online store. This means it will incur a shipping charge. However, all orders are personally reviewed and shipping charges will be refunded on any purchases that contain only digital items.

If you are an Annual Member of the Iowa Quilt Museum, you can receive a complimentary copy of the virtual gallery walk in lieu of your free admission to this exhibit. Simply email us to request that: director@IowaQuiltMuseum.org.

WINTER Hours at the IQM

Monday – Saturday • 10:00am – 4:00pm
Sundays • Noon – 4:00pm

The Iowa Quilt Museum IS open to visitors and we welcome you to come see this fantastic exhibit in person. With an open floor plan, great ventilation, contactless options for transactions and heightened cleaning procedures, we feel that the Iowa Quilt Museum is a relatively safe place to visit! We know that’s not the right choice for every person, though, so keep reading for opportunities to see more of the Iowa Quilt Museum, and String Theory, in a virtual setting.

New Raffle Item

Flowers for Freya Fat Quarter Bundle

In addition to curating our stellar String Theory exhibit, Linzee McCray is a talented quilter, pattern designer and fabric designer. Flowers for Freya, the newest fabric collection by Linzee McCray for Moda Fabrics, was inspired by feed sack era quilts and quilters who used what they had on hand to try and make the world around them just a little more colorful. Flowers for Freya showcases floral and plaid prints prefect for making dresses, quilts, and more. (Linzee curated the exhibit, Feed Sacks: The Colourful History of a Frugal Fabric, at the Iowa Quilt Museum in 2018, and authored a book by the same title that is available for purchase in our gift shop.)

Thanks to Linzee, and the generosity of Moda Fabrics, we are raffling this fat quarter bundle, which includes 31 fat quarters and is valued at $98, before it’s even available for purchase! Tickets are $2 each and can be purchased in our gift shop (in-person or online). The winner of this raffle will be drawn on Monday, February 1st, 2021, and all raffle proceeds benefit the Iowa Quilt Museum.

In order to allow this item to be purchased in the same transaction as other items (like Linzee’s feed sack book!), we have to list is as a ‘physical item’ in our store. This means it will incur a shipping charge. However, all orders are personally reviewed and shipping charges will be refunded on any purchases that contain only raffle tickets.

“Stay Busy” Sale

IQM Gift Shop (online and in-person)

When we first introduced this sale, we had just been hit by 6 inches of snow. Today as I write, the forecast is for 9-17 inches in the next 12 hours! If you’re looking for some new ways to stay busy this winter, we’ve got some great items on sale just for that purpose. We’ll get them shipped out to you as soon as we can!

Click on any of the photos to be re-directed to our online store.

Progress on our Second-Story Renovation

Over the past three months, generous donors from the across the country helped us raise the funds necessary to complete these much-needed repairs and improvements to the second story of our building. The work began a week ago and is progressing really quickly. Later this week (weather allowing) our new climate control system will be installed. It looks like a huge mess right now, but it’s going to be wonderful really soon!

Share the Iowa Quilt Museum with your friends!

Through the magic of technology, we can bring the Iowa Quilt Museum to your quilt guild, civic group, retirement community or any other interested group. We can share our pre-recorded presentation or even bring you a live program complete with Q&A if you so desire. If you know a program coordinator who is struggling to find material right now, encourage them to contact museum director Megan Barrett to inquire about dates and cost for a virtual program with the IQM!
