Classes: 2025 Iowa Quilt Festival

You can really get into the quilting vibe during the Iowa Quilt Festival. Choose from a variety of classes taking place June 4-6, 2025. All class venues are located within Winterset, IA. A complete supply list will be emailed to you once you sign up for your classes.

We have more classes to add to the calendar so be sure to check back weekly! Tickets for the Airing of the Quilts on June 7th are available online or at the door.

Mystery Quilt

Come join Tony Jacobson as he walks you through his 2025 Mystery Quilt. Your class fee includes all the fabrics you need to make this 69-inch square quilt. And the big bonus is that all the fabrics have been cut for you and are ready for you to start sewing. Tony will guide you through each of the steps of making this pattern, slowly revealing the complete quilt design by the end of the class. Hopefully you will learn new skills that can be added to your quilting arsenal. Your quilt top may not be finished by the end of class, but you will have all the knowledge you need to be able to complete it on your own. There are five fabric options to choose from. Quantities of each kit available are limited, so you need to sign up right now to have the best selection to choose from.

Items you will need to bring to class with you:

  • Sewing machine
  • Rotary cutter
  • Cutting mat
  • Thread (neutral color for piecing)
  • Marking pencil
  • Quarter inch seam marker (optional)
  • Acrylic ruler (at least 14 inches)

The class will run from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and we will take an hour lunch break.

Artful Collage

Collage Workshop: Create a unique piece of art by layering various materials onto a backing. In this class, you’ll begin with a background piece of Sharon’s hand-dyed vintage linen (your choice, included in the class fee). From there, participants will add a variety of materials such as felted leaf shapes, painted Tyvek, painted Wonder Under, decorative threads, beads, and other ephemera.

Conversations in Improv

Workshop: Take advantage of this unique opportunity to study with three of the Tiny Pieces Vast Visions exhibiting artists! In this team-taught class, students create a small quilt made up of three distinct units–each focusing on a different improvisational technique taught by one of the instructors. Students will join units with a “conversation connector” that ties the styles together using their favorite takeaways from all three teachers’ methods. They also will be available for small group demos, one on one consults, and more throughout the day.
By the end of the day, you’ll take home a 20-24″ pillow top or small quilt top, ready to be quilted, along with multiple improv ideas, ready to embark on a full-size improv quilt project.

Faux Cathedral Windows

The traditional cathedral window quilt is made from squares of fabric, hand-stitched to create a beautifully textured, dimensional surface—though that can seem daunting! Join Sharon Wasteney to learn a simplified faux cathedral window technique with a creative twist: using rectangles instead of squares to form the design.

Mary Pemble Barton

Listen to Millie Kehrli lecture on Mary Barton and her contribution to recording quilt and textile history. Millie is an Iowa quilter, and teacher who is completed her doctoral dissertation on Mary Barton and her textile legacy.

How did four ladies, Niraja Lorenz from Eugene, Oregon, Deb Cashatt from Cameron Park California, Irene Roderick from Austin, Texas and Susan J. Lampham from Vienna, Virginia find each other? Back in 2021 they were invited to participate in an on-line version of “Meet the Artists”. They came to realize their similar approach to marking art and that their work would make an wonderful exhibit.

Galaxies Quilt Spider Web

In this workshop, inspired by the stunning spiderweb quilt (ca. 1917) from the Mary Pemble Barton collection, participants will explore a modern interpretation of an antique design. Curator Millie was captivated by the quilt’s mesmerizing movement of color and texture, which led her to create “Galaxies,” a pattern based on her close study of the original piece. During the class, you’ll learn from this historical quilt and experiment with block sizes and colorways to create your own unique version of the timeless spiderweb design. Materials fee of $12 is payable to the instructor.
