You can really get into the quilting vibe during the Iowa Quilt Festival. Choose from a variety of classes taking place June 5-7, 2024. All class venues are located within Winterset, IA.

Mystery Quilt

Do you love a good mystery? If so, have you ever done a mystery quilt? Tony Jacobson is offering a one-day mystery quilt class. The finished quilt will be 60″ x 72″. You get to select a kit from the three options in the photo to the left. The kits will come precut so that you will be ready to sit down and sew once class begins. You will not know what the design of the completed quilt is until late in the day. Here is a list of the items you will need to bring to the class:

  • rotary cutter
  • ruler (at least 14″ long)
  • quarter-inch seam marker
  • mechanical marking pencil
  • scissors
  • neutral thread
  • pins
  • cutting mat
  • sewing machine
  • sense of humor

The class will run from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and we will take an hour lunch break.

Class Cost: $120 (includes one of the class kits. We share that information in a follow-up email!)

West Aftican Indigo Resist Dye & Workshop

Learn 4 different indigo resist dyeing techniques: wrap, bean wrap, stitch, and hand painted resist. Participants will each receive a kit which allows them to leave with 1 yard of fabric dyed and ready for their next quilt.

The class will run from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and we will take an hour lunch break.

Join us for a trunk show and discussion dedicated to preserving quilted textiles. Discover the art of repair, restoration, conservation, and appreciation for the textiles we hold dear. Gain insights into caring for these precious pieces.

Audience members are invited to bring their own vintage quilts to share and discuss as time allows.

Shortcuts!

Shortcuts! uses unusual techniques to make tried and true blocks easy and fun way. The blocks are 3 dimensional and really fast to make.  Then take them to the design wall to create your own unique layout.

You will use these blocks over and over again in the future. This quilt was also designed to work well with pre-cut layer cakes.

Techniques Taught:
Simple piecing, dresden plate construction, design color skill tips, and an introduction to Big Stitch Quilting.

$10 pattern cost paid directly to instructor.

Saving Our Treasures Workshop

This is a 4 hour workshop that touches on the basics of restoration, conservation and repair of antique quilts. The workshop will include discussion and trunk show of historical repairs. The hands-on portion will cover basic repairs, restoration techniques, conservation, rescue tips and the recreation of patterns that are damaged beyond repair.

​Participants will be encouraged to bring a vintage quilt in need of repair to discuss and begin work on during the workshop.

A conservation kit is required and can be purchased directly from the instructor for $10.

You are unique and individual! Embrace this by discovering what your personal style is, and how to incorporate this into your work to create original designs that reflect who you are and what you love.

In a step by step process, you will find your natural sense of style and design, and your own true voice will emerge. We will use this as a platform to create a personal Design Journal. 

By the end of the workshop, you will:

  • Use your Design Journal to inspire future projects that speak to your heart. You will want to keep adding and curating your new journal and you understand more and more about yourself.
  • Rely on your journal many new projects, celebrating your newfound voice!

Pumpkin Seed

The Double Wedding Ring is one of the most unfinished patterns in American history. Many were started and never finished. Join Mary Kerr as she presents a new twist on a classic pattern. The workshop encourages participants to showcase vintage Double Wedding Ring fragments into an exciting new setting. Students may bring their own vintage blocks and fragments or they may purchase a kit of their choice in class. Finished sizes will vary.

Vintage kits are available for $30 and may be paid directly to the instructor. Bring your solid cotton and choose a favorite fragment.
