June Iowa Quiltscape: New Quilt Exhibit

We have come to the end of another exhibit Midwest Modern. It’s been so fun having the bright and bold quilts hanging in our gallery and pairing so well with all of the quilts hanging on the covered bridges during the 2022 Airing of the Quilts.

There were over 50 modern quilts hanging in Winterset, IA on June 4 for our annual fundraiser, the Airing of the Quilts. Also hanging were art quilts, miniatures, and a whole variety for every quilt enthusiast. If you missed it, don’t fret, we will do it again next year on June 3, 2023.

For full details on our next exhibit and the Airing of the Quilts, please keep on reading below and may you be enjoying the summer season!

Marti Michell – Yours Truly

New Quilt Exhibit

Marti Michell grew up on her family farm, Glennsdale Farm, in Mitchellville, Iowa. She was very active at her small school where she was the first girl elected Student Council President. Later that year she was elected the State President of the Iowa Girls 4-H Clubs. She went on to major in Textiles and Clothing and Home Ec Journalism from Iowa State University. Marti was an avid seamstress and started teaching sewing classes at home and, concurrently, playing around with patchwork in 1970. These early days led Marti to her first business “Yours Truly”, started in 1972, by selling quilt kits that included cotton fabric instead of polyester, which was most of what you could find in the 1970s. Her business grew and she soon created her own patterns, fabric lines and was featured in quilting magazines.

The Yours Truly exhibit features these early quilts of Marti’s. The exhibit runs through June 28, 2022 to September 25, 2022.

2022 Airing of the Quilts

Wow! We are so thankful for all of you who supported the Iowa Quilt Museum and our annual fundraiser the Airing of the Quilts. We started off with three days of retreat time at the Winterset Livery and classes at the Winterset Library, Madison County Historical Complex, and More Pieces Retreat Center. Everyone who attended can’t wait to come back next year!

There were over 300 quilts on display in Winterset, IA. The Central Iowa Modern Quilt Guild hung and brought quilts for three of our covered bridges and the “Best Of” QuiltCon with the Modern Quilt Guild was featured on the Cutler-Donahoe Bridge at the City Park.

Diane Murtha’s art quilts were on display at the lovely Winterset Art Center. Dorothy Weller’s miniature quilts were featured at More Pieces Quilt Retreat Center and at 103 she still hand pieces and quilts. We had quilts hanging around the square that belong to our staff and volunteers. American Legion and Monumental Park featured patriotic and Quilts of Valor and quilts hung on fences and in yards around town. The Madison County Winery and Des Moines Area Quilters Guild teamed up to display over 80 quilts and Tony Jacobson hung quilts at the historical McBroom Barn.

If you didn’t hear, Covered Bridge Quilters Guild moved their annual show to the same weekend at the Winterset Elementary School. Our Historical Complex also featured a quilt exhibit. As you can tell, quilts were quite the theme on June 4 in Winterset, IA and we look forward to doing even more next year!

Thank you to our exhibit committee: Marianne Fons (IQM Board Member), Randall Parkin (IQM Board President), Star Ann Kloberdanz (IQM Board Member), Tony Jacobson (IQM Board Member), Scott Smith (Iowa Theater), Jessica Plunkett (CIAMQG and Designer) and Melody Reels (Quilts of Valor). We met monthly to plan this event and are so lucky to have such great friends of the Iowa Quilt Museum.

And with every great event, it can’t be done without so many volunteers and we are forever grateful for their devotion to our event and museum. Big thanks go out to: Mark Wildin, Annette Wilden, Sandy Kordick, Jackie Heckathorn, Gloria Jean Church, Marianne Fons, Gaylene Blankers, Star Ann Kloberdanz, Randall Parkin, Jerry Parkin, Jon Barrett, Megan Barrett, United Methodist Church, First United Presbyterian Church, Central Iowa Modern Quilt Guild, Jessica Plunkett, Melody Reels, Modern Quilt Guild, Darci Read, Heather Kinion, Des Moines Area Quilters Guild, Jill Reber, Katy Schmitt, Beth Hunsberger, Carol Leichty, Kate Sullivan, Marcia Trevillyan, Ella Hagerty, Brad Miller, Max Heckathorn, Scott Smith, and Lisa Schumacher.

These ARE Your Grandmother’s Quilts

We have received a great response to our request for quilt submissions for our winter exhibit.

Like most quilt appreciators, we love vintage quilts too! But we also love new quilts made in recent decades. So, if you are a quilter and a Grandmother living in Iowa, please be sure to submit YOUR quilts by July 15, 2022.

In addition to keeping you up-to-date on all of the happenings here at the IQM, we also use our Iowa QuiltScape messages to share quilt-related news and events happening across our great state. Check it out!

I attended Airing of the Quilts in 2021 & Shipshewana, Indiana’s popular quilt event this year. Winterset’s Airing of the Quilts is MUCH better!! Your emphasis is on quilts and the people who made them (theirs was primarily on sales), and you had FAR MORE quilts than Shipshewana. Winterset’s displays in covered bridges & other venues made for comfortable viewing, as opposed to Shipshewana’s crowded exhibit hall. I could go on about the differences, but in short, keep up the good work. I hope to return to Airing of the Quilts, but not Shipshewana.
