Waste Not, Want Not

On exhibit at the IQM through January 27, 2019

 

Resourceful quilters have a long history of making artistic quilts utilizing the smallest scraps and efficient piecing methods—adhering to the philosophy of “waste not, want not.” This exhibit is curated by Virginia Berger of Adel, Iowa.

Waste Not, Want Not Exhibit Opening Reception

Saturday, October 27th, 6:00 – 8:00 pm

The Iowa Quilt Museum Board of Directors invites you to an opening reception to celebrate our latest exhibit. During the reception, guests will have a chance to meet guest curator Virginia Berger and hear her remarks about the exhibit and its contents. Light refreshments will be served and there is no admission charge.

 

DIY Barn Block Painting Class

Two opportunities beginning in late October at the Iowa Quilt Museum

In Iowa and other states, “Barn Blocks,” painted panels representing patchwork quilt block designs, decorate barns, rural outbuildings, and garages in towns.

In this three-session class, you’ll learn about American quilt block history, select a favorite block of your own, and learn special, no-fail techniques as you draft and paint your own 4’ x 4’ quilt block panel. It’s easy and fun!

Week 1: History/Design – Sunday, October 28th, 1:00 – 2:00 OR Tuesday, October 30th, 6:00 – 7:00pm
Week 2: Draft – Sunday, November 11th, 1:00 -2:30 OR Tuesday, November 13th, 6:00 – 7:30pm
Week 3: Paint – Sunday, November 18th, 1:00 – 4:00 OR Tuesday, November 20th, 6:00 – 9:00pm

Register for either the Sunday OR Tuesday class and pay online HERE or in person at the IQM – 68 E Court, Winterset, Iowa

Participants will need a 4’x4’ piece of plywood, paint, a brush, and some straight edge tools. Wait until after the first class to purchase!

Iowa Quilt Museum Director, Megan Barrett, would be delighted to visit your quilt guild or civic group and share a presentation about the Iowa Quilt Museum. We ask only that you pay a mileage reimbursement and make a donation to the IQM in whatever amount suits your organization. Email Megan (director@iowaquiltmuseum.org) to book your date in 2019.

“Our Quilted Neighborhood” Quilt Show

October 27th & 28th in Fort Dodge

The Fort Dodge Area Quilters will hold their 24th Biennial Quilt Show on Saturday, October 27th, 9:00 to 5:00, and Sunday, October 28th, 10:00 to 4:00. Over 300 quilted items will be on display at the Webster County Fairgrounds as well as vendors, a quilt raffle, silent auction, fabric dive, and Dave’s mobile sharpening service. Lunch will be available for $5. Admission is $7 for adults, $3 for ages 7-12 or $10 for a two-day pass.

 

The Biennial Keepsake Quilt Guild Quilt Show

November 3rd and 4th in Cedar Falls

This show features over 100 quilts made by members of the Keepsake Quilters Guild to showcases the creative work of their members and raise money to fund guild activities. The show will be held at the Cedar Falls Community Center located at 528 Main Street (on the corner of 6th St. and Main St.) on Saturday, November 3, from 9:00am to 5:00pm and Sunday, November 4, 2018 from 10:00am to 4:00pm.

    What a gorgeous venue for displaying all the beautiful quilts. We were so excited to see the lovely blue ribbon quilts on our way back from Denver to Ohio. Thanks for sharing!!

    Loved the Waste Not, Want Not exhibit. It reminds me of how gifted women were and are and gave me something to aspire to.
