Iowa QuiltScape for June 1, 2021

The forecast for Saturday just keeps getting better and better! It’s going to be a glorious day for admiring beautiful quilts, landscapes and cultural landmarks in Winterset and Madison County!

If you don’t yet have your tickets to the Madison County Airing of the Quilts, we encourage you to purchase them in advance. This will save you a little time on Saturday so you can maximize your quilt-viewing experience!

Yes! To purchase a ticket for the Airing of the Quilts on Saturday, June 5th, come to the Iowa Quilt Museum at 68 E Court, Winterset. If you purchase your ticket in advance, though, the map will be emailed to you and you can begin your day at any of the locations listed on the map. This means that if you’re driving into Winterset, you can stop at a covered bridge or two on your way if you so desire.

You’ll need to drive to each of the covered bridge displays. Each is a 10-15 minute drive from Winterset and there are some gravel roads. You can see several of the displays in Winterset with a nice walk OR you can drive and park around town. You can walk or drive to Winterset City Park (12 blocks from IQM) and once there, you can walk to the handful of displays there or drive from one side of the park to the other. In summary, the Airing of the Quilts accommodates various levels of walking/driving comfort for visitors.

Admission to the Iowa Quilt Museum is INCLUDED with your ticket to the Airing of the Quilts! Our current display is A Quilted Garden: Floral Quilts from the New England Quilt Museum. The IQM is open from 10:00 – 5:00 so if you’re really wanting to get the most out of your day, save your visit to the museum until after 4:00 when the community displays close.

We’re fortunate to have two wonderful quilt shops within steps of the Iowa Quilt Museum! Piece Works Quilt Shop is half a block to the west of us. Our local Ben Franklin store is our neighbor to the east and boasts a wonderful fabric department in addition to a host of other wonderful treasures (and memories, maybe!).

Thank you! You’ll receive an email from us this week with your map and other instructions. You can begin your day at any of the locations listed on the map. This means that if you’re driving into Winterset, you can stop at a covered bridge or two on your way if you so desire.

There are several options for lunch in Winterset and that information will be provided on your map when you purchase your ticket.

The covered bridges do NOT have restroom facilities so plan accordingly for that. Public restrooms can be found at Winterset City Park and the Madison County Chamber of Commerce (downtown Winterset). You are also always welcome to use the facilities at the Iowa Quilt Museum if you need them throughout the day.

Winterset is home to an award-winning downtown shopping district. You’ll find a wonderful variety of lovely boutique stores in our town square and the adjacent streets. Maps are available at the IQM or the Madison County Chamber of Commerce Visitor Center.

If you’re in town before 10:00, visit the Madison County Farmers Market on the courthouse lawn (8am-Noon).

Quilts, Wine & What Ifs

Friday, June 4
5:00-7:00pm

Tony Jacobson, nationally known quilt designer and Creative Director for Piece Works Quilt Shop in Winterset, will be presenting his program Quilting: the Art of What If. In this hour-long presentation he will present around 40 quilts showing you how different the same pattern can look by changing the colors, style of fabrics, and even switching up the values of the fabrics used in the background and the main prints.

Piece Works Quilt Shop will be supplying gift bags for all those who pre-register for the program. There will also be door prizes given throughout the night. Covered Bridges Winery will supply a glass of wine (or beverage of your choice) and an individual charcuterie plate for all who pre-register as well.

We invited friends of the museum to make their own interpretation of the Iowa Star Block. The response was amazing and we have over 20 of these beautiful blocks. Some are finished and ready to use as wall hanging, some are just the block and are ready to be the centerpiece of your next quilting project!

Fourteen quilts from this year’s auction catalog have been selected as the docket for this year’s live quilt auction. The live auction will take place during our fundraising dinner on the evening on Saturday, June 5th, but if you’re not able to attend in-person, you can place a proxy bid online that will be monitored during the live auction.
