Class fee is $10. Register online through this link or call the museum at 515-462-5988.

Quilts of Valor Salute

On Exhibit through July 7th
Quilts of Valor Award Ceremony • July 7th, 5:00pm

We’re in the last days of displaying our Quilts of Valor Salute exhibit here at the Iowa Quilt Museum. This exhibit contains seventeen Quilts of Valor and twelve quilts from Mary Kerr’s Old Glory collection. These vintage tops were recently quilted by invited longarmers and they are fabulous examples of custom quilting. The seventeen Quilts of Valor from this exhibit will be awarded to local veterans in a ceremony on Sunday, July 7th, at 5:00pm. The public is invited to attend although space and seating are somewhat limited.

Stitched Through Time: A History of Quilting

New Exhibit opening on Tuesday, July 9th
at the Iowa Quilt Museum

Members Only ‘Sneak Peek’ • Monday, July 8th • 5:00 – 7:00 pm
Opening Reception • Friday, July 12th • 6:00 – 8:00 pm

The Iowa Quilt Museum is thrilled to be working with Judy Schwender, retired curator from the National Quilt Museum in Paducah, Kentucky, for our next exhibit, Stitched Through Time: A History of Quilting. This exhibit, which will open to the public on Tuesday, July 9th, will be on display at the IQM through September 29th. The art of quilting has evolved over hundreds of years, often impacted by shifts in social class and advances in technology. This exhibit explores the progression of quilts and quilting over the course of the past 700 years, and most rapidly over the past 180 years—examining its basic materials, its most rudimentary tools, and current day gadgets. If you’re a lover of historic quilts, this is a ‘must see’ exhibit!

Meet curator Judy Schwender at an opening reception for the exhibit on Friday, July 12th, from 6:00 – 8:00pm. The opening reception is free and open to the public and light refreshments will be served.

Supporting Members of the Iowa Quilt Museum are invited to a “Members Only Sneak Peek” with our Museum Director, Megan Barrett, on Monday, July 8th, between 5:00 and 7:00pm. Please RSVP to director@IowaQuiltMuseum.org if you plan to attend that event. Not a member? Click here to learn about how you can support the IQM through an annual membership.

Motorcoach Trip to International Quilt Study Center & Museum

Friday, August 2nd
Leaving from the Iowa Quilt Museum

If you’ve never been to the International Quilt Study Center & Museum in Lincoln, Nebraska, it’s time to remedy that! And if you haven’t been for a while, then surely you’re ready for a return trip. Join IQM director, Megan Barrett, on a motorcoach trip to Lincoln on Friday, August 2nd, and take in this fabulous museum with friends without having to worry about the driving!

While at the IQSCM, we’ll see the following exhibits: ‘Collecting & Recollecting,’ ‘SAQA 30th Anniversary,’ ‘150 Years of Red and White,’ ‘Kathy Caraccio: Quilt Series,’ ‘Liz Axford: Overlay,’ and ‘Whimsy.’ We’ll be treated to a guided tour through some of the exhibits and others can be self-explored. The tour will also include a behind-the-scenes tour of the storage and preservation rooms of the IQSCM.

No tour of quilts would be complete without some shopping and this trip is no exception. Shopping destinations will be announced closer to the trip date.

The price of the tour is $100 per person ($90 for IQM Members) and includes: comfortable motorcoach transportation, admission to the IQSCM plus a behind-the-scenes tour, lunch and snacks, trips to two quilt shops (sorry, no allowance provided!) and quality time spent in the company of like-minded quilters! A portion of your registration cost also helps support the Iowa Quilt Museum enabling us to continue providing top-notch exhibits and programming.

The tour will depart from the Iowa Quilt Museum at 7:00 am and return at approximately 9:00 pm. The IQM will be open at 6:30 am for those early birds who would like to view the exhibit before departure, and will re-open for 30 minutes upon our return for the night owls. The exhibit at that time will be “Stitched Through Time: A History of Quilting” curated by Judy Schwender.

Register for the trip online or call the Iowa Quilt Museum at 515-462-5988 to register. A minimum of 39 travelers are needed by July 26th so grab a friend and get signed up today for this fun experience!

Call for Bicycle Quilts

Winterset is an overnight town on this year’s RAGBRAI! An annual bike ride across Iowa. We think it would be pretty awesome if we could make a bicycle themed pop-up exhibit to welcome the 15,000+ visitors to town and to the Iowa Quilt Museum. (Ok, they probably won’t all visit the IQM!) So, if you have a bicycle quilt and would be willing to share it with us for a week or so, we want to hear from you! We know this is a pretty small niche so we could use your help reaching out, too! Share this request with ALL of your quilty friends and let’s see what we can come up with. If you want to get busy and make one for us to exhibit, that works too! We’ve seen some pretty awesome patterns out there.

Thank you for reading Iowa QuiltScape.
Get out and enjoy some quilts!

Janet Fogg made a great bibycle with flowers quilt which she showed us at a lecture at the Northwest quilt show in Seattle (2008). She is a local teacher in the area southeast of Portland OR.
