Feed Sacks: A Lecture by Linzee Kull McCray
Thursday, May 10th in Grinnell
If you missed seeing Linzee Kull McCray at the Iowa Quilt Museum earlier this year, here’s another chance. Based on her book Feed Sacks: The Colourful History of a Frugal Fabric, author Linzee Kull McCray will share the story of the evolution of utilitarian bags stitched from plain white cotton to sacks sewn of exuberantly colored and patterned fabrics. These containers for animal feed, seeds, fertilizer, and flour became dresses, aprons, curtains, and quilts, repurposed by thrifty women in the first half of the 20th century. Long after paper bags were cheaper and considered more sanitary, cotton producers and bag manufacturers carried out ambitious marketing schemes to build and maintain loyalty to cotton sacks. In 1942, it was estimated that more than 3 million people wore clothing stitched from feed sacks. Linzee will share examples of feed sacks and the items made from them during her talk—if you have sacks or items re-purposed from feed sacks, Linzee encourages you to bring them along to share, as well. This event is hosted by the Jewel Box Quilt Guild in Grinnell. There is a $10 guest fee for those who are not guild members.
